Press report on The Big Day
A great days
table tennis was enjoyed by 33 entrants in this years ‘Big Day’; event run by
East Lancashire Table Tennis League. The singles championship winner was Howard
Whewell (pic 1, left) whose fine attack spin game in a hard fought final
overcame the dogged backspin defence of the runner up Colin Parkinson (pic 1,
right). Howard in his earlier years was a county champion, but after a 10 year
absence from the game only returned to playing last year, and to be East Lancs
Champion so soon is a great achievement. The doubles was won by David Kay &
Liam Bedford (Pic 2, right pair) and the runners up were Barry Hall &
Noel Duffy (Pic 2, left pair).
Colin Parkinson who was runner up in the straight singles event, was the victor in the handicap singles event over youngster Harry Bell (pic 3). Harry Bell did one better by being the winner alongside Bernard Milnes in the handicap doubles (left pair pic 4) over runners up Lee Cooper & Liam Walsh. In the Plate Competition the winner was Nigel Fewster (pic 5 right) & the runner up Neil Hepworth (pic5, left)
