Overall league Summary
Premier Division & East Lancs Table Tennis Champions 2015-2016 are Ramsbottom ‘A’. Congratulations to Liam Bedford, Marin Wyatt, Dave Kay, Matt Nettleton and Ashly Bradburn. Two top 5 merit places also in Liam finishing 3rd & Martin 4th. They also took the Doubles merit runners up prize. Old Masters ‘A’ had a great season as well finishing second, winning the doubles merits and boasting the singles merit winner in the formidable Howard Whewell. League Chairman Ged Simpson’s team had one of their best ever seasons to finish a close 3rd with Keith Ward also coming second in the individual merit charts & Keith Jackson 5th. Sadly to face relegation are Whalley Hawks who finished bottom and Young Ramsbottom just above them.
In Division One ‘The Lions’ romped home to become title victors. Well done Matt Harrison (merit winner), Ian Mitchell (merit 5th), Martin Ormsby, Chris Walton & John Kopec. They also came runners up in the doubles merit. Also promoted in second place are KSB ‘A’ who also took the doubles merit title, and top 5 merit individual finishes in Daven Argile (runner up ), & Matt Hodkinson (4th). Their best player Matt Hirst would have been in top two had he played one more match to qualify!. Ramsbottom ‘C’ finished in 3rd place on top of a great season by Keith Haworth (merit 3rd). Relegation is awaiting bottom placed Tackyfire and Whalley Kestrels just above them.
In Division Two, the winners comfortably were Ramsbottom ‘D’, Messer’s Harry Bell, Stephen Siddall, Paul Wood & Rob Lee. Young Harry had a great season to finish runner up as well in the individual merits and Stephen Siddall also finished 5th. Best Centre Raptors amazed even themselves to get promoted two years running in finishing second but it is well deserved and they won’t be overawed in the higher division I’m sure. KSB ‘B’ finished 3rd in the end and will look back wishing they had not had such a poor start because this squad should have got promoted! Still they do boast the division’s top player in Trevor Elkington who won the merit award. One of the division’s most improved teams was Best Centre Jets who won the Doubles merit award. Old Masters ‘B’ had John Thornber finish 4th in the merits and also took the doubles merit runner up prize. Hyndburners Fred Wade had a good season finishing 3rd in the singles merits. It was close at the bottom end and was decided on the last game, but KSB ‘C’ go down finishing bottom and Brierfield’B’ also finished in a relegation position.
In Division Three, Best Centre Phantoms swept the board winning the division by a mile and being the only unbeaten team of the whole league. They also took the winner places in the individual merit and doubles merit. Excellent season for Scott Fleming (merit 1st), Jack Cooney (4th), James Balmforth, Darren Wright & Warren Parrington. Slayers claimed the runners up spot, and Peter Booth was 3rd in the merits. Youngster Joe Holt of Hyndburn TTC ‘C’ was runner up in the individual merits, and the other top 5 merit player not mentioned so far was Doals Vikings Ian mills in 5thplace. Ian Mills partnered by Thomas Sumner were unbeaten in the doubles all season and largely responsible for their Vikings team getting the doubles runner up place. Worthy of mention are two young teams from Whalley. Whalley Falcons, in their first season, and who were bottom of the league and without a win till Christmas, finished a credible 4th in the end, and Whalley Merlins won the Fred Holden Handicap Team competition. Burnley Focus
The Burnley area’s top team Brierfield in the Premier Division will be pleased to have finished just above the drop zone and will look forward to consolidating their Premier status next season. Best performer of the regular players for them was Jack Keogh on 55%.
Burnley had no Division One teams this season, but they will next as Best Centre Raptors gained promotion two years on the trot coming runners up in Division two. Well done Richard Tolkeley, Rob Tolkeley,Liam Walsh & Dylan Storey. What a great achievement for Best Centre TT Club, in just 4 years to have got a team into the first Division. Their other Division Two team, Best Centre Jets also had a good season finishing 5th in the end and claiming the Doubles merit award. Their best performer was Ian Baskerville on 64%, who in fact individually was the Best Centre top player of the season, even outperforming the promoted Raptor players. Sadly Brierfield ‘B’ were demoted the very last game of the season has their closest rivals gained just enough points to go above them. Peter Marshland was their best player on a respectable 49%, who will hope to help them bounce straight back up next year.
In Division Three, Best Centre Phantoms were the only unbeaten team of the whole league with 15 wins and a draw. They got a clean sweep of the Division Three title, promotion, the singles merit winner in Scott Fleming, and the doubles merit prize. Jack Cooney got 4th in the merits and the other members of this all-star cast were James Balmforth, Darren Wright & Warren Parrington. Best Centre is open to new players and beginners to join their club on a Monday night and be perhaps part of a new team in Division Three next season? (Contact Darren for more info on 07736473609)
Ramsbottom & Rossendale Focus
Ramsbottom ‘A’ are to be crowned East Lancashire Table Tennis Champions 2016! What a great achievement for Liam Bedford (merit 3rd), Martin Wyatt (merit 4th), Dave Kay, Matt Nettleton & Ashly Bradburn. They also took the doubles merit runners up prize. Ramsbottom have strength in depth and their ‘B; team finished 6th with a good season from Martin Holt with impressive stats of 62%. Unfortunately their other Premier team Young Ramsbottom were relegated despite Mohammed Sajid (53%) & Dominic Siddall (52 %) doing more than enough to hold their own individually.
Rossendale will have premier division status next season as KSB ‘A’ claimed the runner up and promotion place in Division One. Well done Daven Argile (merit runner up), Matt Hodgkinson (4th), Matt Hirst, Steve Horner & Neil McKinnon. They also won the doubles merit title. Ramsbottom ‘C’ led by singles merit 3rd place Keith Haworth finished 3rd. Bacup team Doals Marauders will be pleased to have survived their first season in Division One finishing 6th. Neil Hepworth their best performer on 54%.
In Division Two Ramsbottom ‘D’ triumphed easily to claim the title and promotion. Harry Bell was runner up in the merits, Stephen Siddall 5th. The other members of the squad who made their contribution were Paul Wood & Rob Lee. KSB ‘B’ had a great season in the second half and finished 3rd, with the super Trevor Elkington being the Divisions best player and winning the merit award. Rolling Doals (Bacup) finished 6th, their best performer David Greenwood (53%), & were unlucky to miss a doubles merit top two prize by just 1 point. KSB ‘D’ on the very last game of the season got themselves just above the drop zone to survive, thanks in many ways to their best player Craig Milnes (61%). Despite a respectable season by Carlton Cooper (54%), KSB ‘C’ finished bottom and are relegated.
One Ramsbottom team & two Rossendale teams featured in Division Three. Doals Vikings finished 5th, but were amongst the honours with winning the doubles runner up merit award, as well as Ian Mills finishing in the top 5 merit individual places. KSB ‘E’ ended up 7th, their top performer being Andy Wood on 58% & Ramsbottom ‘E’ 8th, best player Bryan Edwards (64%).
